A Brief History of Mara
The village of Mara was established in 1885, around the time of the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway through Sicamous. At this time, transportation was by way of rail, paddlewheeler on the interior lakes and rivers, and of course stagecoach over land, where no rail service was available. Agriculture was, and still is the primary activity in Mara and the Shuswap River Valley. Lumber mills along the Shuswap River still exist in Enderby, further to the south, although the annual log drives which once carried logs down the Shuswap River from Mabel Lake and Sugar Lake in the East, have long since ceased.
